Steps for Critiquing Art
STEP 2
Analyze
Use the Elements of Art and Principles of Design* to write a reflection. Be sure to fully discuss the composition of the work.
STEP 3
Interpret
What is the artwork about? Don’t make this up! If the work is an observational drawing, it may not have a “deep” meaning, but you can still talk about the goals of the piece.
STEP 4
Evaluate
How good is the artwork? Is it successful? Why or why not?
*Elements of Art: Line, shape, space, form, texture, color, and value
Principles of Design: Unity, pattern, rhythm, contrast, emphasis, balance, movement, harmony, proportion, repetition
